Hotel Review: Jamaica Inn

A few weeks ago, I made my twice-annual pilgrimage to Jamaica; this time for my company's debut trip for Jamaica Carnival. I arrived a few days earlier than the group to spend some alone time with my boyfriend. We spent two amazing days in Ocho Rios at a lovely hotel called Jamaica Inn.

First Impressions

Nestled in a quiet area off Main street was our home away from home. As we drove through the gates, we were welcomed by manicured lawns, flowers in bloom, lush balconies and blue accent walls. As I walked to the reception, I was greeted by the vivid blue of the Caribbean Sea in the distance. The sun setting over the sea was the perfect backdrop. As I looked around I noticed the Victorian columns and pillars and white-painted wood accents. Very much the island feel.

Receiving a warm welcome by the owner of the hotel was a personal touch I appreciated and it set the tone for the amazing customer service we expected and ultimately received. Check-in was quick and simple, and there was a porter at hand ready to take our belongings to our suite. When we were settled in our room we received complimentary welcome drinks made just right. Yummy rum punch!

The Room

As soon as I walked through the door, I was greeted by a gorgeous view. Beyond the white shutters of the balcony door was a glimpse of the private beach. Our balcony overlooked the croquet field (umm yes!)  and swimming pool, with the sea over yonder but still close enough that I could hear the lapping of the waves against the shore. The balcony made for perfect people watching as we sipped our drinks.

Our deluxe room had plenty of luxurious amenities, including fluffy robes, an extensive mini-bar, and a heavenly king size bed. What I also liked was that there was no television. It allowed my boyfriend and I to just be present with each other and be in the moment. However, I was surprised to find there were no tea and coffee making facilities in the room. I suppose in such hot weather, people are likely not drinking hot drinks?

The Beach

Private beach = never a crowd! When we finally went out on the beach, there were only a few other guests taking in the late afternoon sun. The beach was about a mile-long stretch of clean, white sand and sparkling turquoise water. Sprinkled with strategically-placed palm trees, it was perfect for sunbathing. The comfortable lounge chairs didn't hurt either. I was exhausted (and tipsy) from a boat party we had been to earlier in the morning and didn't touch the water, but B, ever the swimmer, was frolicking. I promptly fell asleep as soon as my head hit that chair. Top 5 best beach days.

The Verdict

This getaway was fabulous. It was just what I needed before the busy week ahead when the FestiHopp clients descended upon the island. The service in the hotel was terrific; the bed was very comfortable; the private beach was amazing. The hotel itself is in a fantastic location - an escape within the hustle and bustle of Ocho Rios.

My biggest highlight was fading into sleep with the balcony door open, feeling the warm breeze blowing over me while the steelpan band performed some of Bob Marley's hits. I highly recommend this hotel. Thanks to my B for planning this. He did good!
